L is the Letter for [by Vassilis Manoussakis]

A word stuck in my mind
the other day
but refused to be pronounced
I took a trip
to a palmist of the past
to decipher what it stood for
But the lady, frightened and aghast,
left me there hanging, wondering
what monstrous thought
among the lines she saw
I looked it up
and one night I remembered
in my dream
it was you who knew
Tried to reach you
a message in the answering machine
telling me
in a voice
out of tune and out of love
that you left, you were leaving
you will leave
You don’t live here anymore
The word
went on to tattoo itself
upon my brain
torturing my nights
possessing my days
urging me to find its meaning
and surrender to the whim
of the letters
I still could not utter, though
Find me, speak of me, spell me
don’t hold back
or I will stay here forever
it threatened
And I still not dared
to accept
that L was the letter for
the right place to be
feeling whole for ever more.

  1. I love this poem because I can feel myself moving through each phrase, and in just under two minutes lived through something that was in another's heart.
