Rose [by Lena Kallergi]

After you dig the tunnel and escape
Save the soil, the rocks
That held you in your hole
After the first breath of freedom
Build yourself a room
A protection from the rain, the cold
You have the material.
And when you feel it as a prison
Break down the door and go
You will find it elsewhere
In your new position
You will have better air
And all the sky you can stand.
Until the walls close around you.
Until you find a new road again.
Every change a rose petal
In its time it will fade.
The truth dust ending
Writes another line
In your red poem.
And if the succession of all withering moments tires you.
And you want to stop
You have the gifts from your excavations
Experiential luggage.
Living, you have become a collector of life.
Memory preserves the prima materia
You allowed in your travels to age.
Time will make its cycle bloom again.
Thorn remain.

Nostalgic for Music [by Lena Kallergi]

If you hear that I was lost in strange woods
And I spent the inheritance feeding the gypsies
That I now sleep on water
And only the moon knows me
Do not fear
I will run while it lasts
Even if there is no time to be one with the wings

Even if I barely find an office job

Here all wander mute, reluctant to add
A grey note to tone deafness
My face can no longer stand
The wild calm
Here the sky touches me
Only when it rains

(Translated by Vassilis Manoussakis and Valerie Coulton)

Lifting [by Lena Kallergi]

I don’t iron. It is hubris
To annul the wrinkles.

I have never seen scratches

Wiped out so easily.

Why should clothes forget their scars
So smoothly.

Who polishes us.

Lot [by Lena Kallergi]

A garden fell to me.
Even though sea has always been my love.

Let it be so.
I will sow boats.
I will plant flowers with sails.
I will hide shells in the heart of lettuces.
Salt will drip from my pomegranates.

I will teach seagull phonetics to the sparrows.

In the middle, a large octopus
Will support the vines.

And at the end I will paint two blue trees
To widen the horizon.

Thank god, I don’t eat fish.

Soothsayer [by Lena Kallergi]

Bones
Entrails
Skins of slaughtered animals
Precious nails
Ankle bones
All burn together
And their smoke is lost
In the darkness
Unread.

If you don’t receive a blessing
From the blood
The beast won’t talk to you
However much it knows.

I have no idea
Where the other limbs are
I see a few tendons
On my plate.

I’ve never seen
Thigh bones
Or dark shoulder blades
But people study the stars a lot.

I only see
Meat hooks in the streets
Wide open ribs
Hollow.

I see
Secret hecatombs
In my packaged meat.

The fortune-teller [by Lena Kallergi]

Looking at palms I forget myself
Guessing at directions
Hiding from people’s looks carnivorous truths
Fingers touching fingers
Beautiful ridgelines I cannot explain
Deeply carved rivers and roads
Two-minute architecture for eternal temples
I come close to the door of the infinite, I hold back
It’s enough for me to remember everything.

My poor art
At the mercy of fortune.

Trick [by Lena Kallergi]

I’ll send my words to foreign countries
To faraway summer camps
So they can be dressed in the colour of cities
With noble carvings in the joints of restored houses
They can play in the mud naked beyond the equator
They can chase reindeer and smell of cedar
You will see them for the first time hidden, magical
While you’re driving, you will sing them and smile
Guessing that they’re saying something nice.

Too used to listening to them
You think they resemble all the others

Tuned in to what is familiar
You feel the birds departing
And betray them.
